Frequently asked questions
Short answers about how the unscrambler works, which words count, and how we handle your data.
01 Which dictionary do you use?
Results come from ENABLE — the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon — a public-domain English word list. We use 168,551 of its entries, everything from two to 15 letters. It is the list most US crossword and word-game players recognise, but it is not any game's official tournament list, so we do not claim a word is "valid in tournament play".
02 How are points calculated?
Each letter carries its standard English Scrabble value — common letters like E, A and S score 1, rare ones like Q and Z score 10 — and a word's score is the sum of its letters. Board bonuses are not included, so treat the number as a way to rank your options rather than a final score.
03 How do blank or wildcard tiles work?
Type a ? for each blank, up to 2. A blank stands in for whichever letter a word needs and always counts as zero points — so CAT spelled with a real T scores 5, and the same word with the T supplied by a blank scores 4.
04 A word I know is missing. Why?
Usually one of three reasons:
- It is a proper noun, abbreviation or hyphenated form. Word lists of this kind leave those out almost entirely.
- It needs a letter you did not type — worth checking the letter box for a typo.
- It is a recent coinage, or valid in a British list but not an American one. Tell us and we will look into it.
The reverse never happens: every word we show is in the list, even the ones that look invented.
05 Why only 15 letters?
Fifteen letters is the longest word in our dictionary, so a sixteenth letter could not help any result. The limit keeps the tool instant — solving fifteen letters takes a few hundredths of a second in your browser.
06 Do you show ads, and what do you collect?
The site is free because it carries a small number of clearly labelled ads, and we use Google Analytics to see which pages get used. We do not require an account and we do not sell personal data. The letters you type are solved in your browser — they are never sent to us. Full detail is in the privacy policy.
07 How can I reach you?
Email hello@word-unscramble.com. Corrections to the word list get read first.
Still stuck on a puzzle? The fastest answer is usually the tool itself — unscramble your letters and read down from the longest words.
