Pick the best play
Words are sorted by points, so the highest scorer in each group is the first one you see.
Using a blank tile
Type a ? wherever you have a blank or a wildcard — up to 2 of them. The solver tries every letter in that position, so CA? comes back with 44 words. 18 of them are three letters long: ACE, ACT, ARC, CAB, CAD, CAM, CAN, CAP, CAR, CAT, CAW, CAY, LAC, MAC, OCA, PAC, SAC, VAC. A longer set with two blanks will find a great deal more.
Blanks score nothing, and the results say so. CAT spelled with real tiles is 5 points; the same word with the T supplied by a blank is 4. That difference is the whole reason to know which letter a blank became before you commit to a play.
Reading the results
Words come back grouped by length, longest first, because length is usually what you are short of. Inside each group the highest-scoring word comes first, and the best one in the group is outlined when it beats one point per letter — a seven-letter word worth seven is just seven common letters, and worth marking only when it is not.
Scores use the standard English letter values, summed. Board bonuses are not included and cannot be, since we do not know your board. Treat the number as a way to rank your options rather than a final answer.
How to unscramble words easily
The tool will do it in a few thousandths of a second, but if you would rather solve it yourself, five things help more than staring harder:
Pull off the endings first. ING, ED, ER, LY and a trailing S account for an enormous share of English words. Take the ending away and you are solving a much shorter puzzle.
Keep consonant pairs together. TH, CH, SH, ST, TR, BR and PL travel as units far more often than they split up. Treating them as one piece cuts the number of arrangements you have to imagine.
Count your vowels. English runs at roughly one vowel in three letters. Too few and you are looking at a short word; too many and the answer probably has a vowel pair in it.
Start from the rare letters. J, Q, X and Z have the fewest places they can sit, so they narrow the field fastest. Q is the strongest clue of all — it is almost always followed by U.
Work down from the longest. A seven-letter word usually contains a six-letter one. Finding the shorter word first often shows you which letter was left over, and where it goes.

Questions, answered
Is the word unscrambler free?
Yes. Every tool on this site is free to use, with no account and no limits on how many letter sets you check.
Which dictionary do you use?
ENABLE — a public-domain English word list of 168,551 words, from two to 15 letters. It is free to use and widely used in word tools, which is why we can tell you exactly which list you are searching.
How do blank tiles work?
Type a question mark for each blank, up to 2. A blank can stand in for any letter, and it counts as zero points — so a word that needs one scores less than the same word spelled with real tiles.
How are the points worked out?
Each letter carries its standard English letter value, and a word's score is the sum of its letters. Words are listed highest-scoring first within each length.
Can you unscramble a word for me?
That is the whole tool. Type the letters into the box above and you get every word they can make, longest first. Give it CAT and you get CAT, ACT, AT and TA; give it a seven-letter jumble and you will usually get a hundred or more.
What word do these letters make?
Read the top group first — it holds the longest words, and if there is only one, that is almost always the answer you wanted. When several words share the top length, they are ordered by score, and any of them uses all the letters you typed.
Why is a word missing?
If a word is not in ENABLE it will not appear, even when it is a real word — proper nouns, abbreviations and very new coinages are mostly absent. Every result, on the other hand, is a word from the list.
