Playing it with a room full of people
Print one sheet each and set a timer for ten minutes. Most people get the easy twelve in three or four, then slow right down — which is the point, because that is when the room starts talking. Nobody solves poinsettia quietly.
In a classroom, the two levels let one sheet cover a wide age range without anyone noticing they were given the easier half. Younger children do better with the hints read aloud rather than printed; older ones treat the hints as an insult and cover them up.
If you are running it as a party round, score two points for a word solved without the hint and one with. The carols are worth doing last — they look impossible until someone spots a short word, and then the whole title falls over at once.
Stuck on one of them? The word unscrambler takes the letters and shows every word they can make. That is cheating, and we will not tell anyone.
Questions
Is the printable version free?
Yes, and there is nothing to download or sign up for. The print button uses your browser's own print dialog, so you can send it to a printer or save it as a PDF from there. It lays out on A4 and US Letter alike.
Where are the answers?
In the answer key above — click Show the answer key. When you print, the answers always come out on the second page, so you can keep that one and hand out the first.
Is it too hard for young children?
The first twelve words are four to six letters and should suit roughly ages six and up, especially with the hints read out. The harder set runs to eleven letters and is aimed at adults.
Can I use this at school or at work?
Print as many copies as you need. The words are all ordinary English nouns, with no characters or brands in the list, so there is nothing that needs anyone's permission.
